Your Braces Dictionary
Are you ever overwhelmed and confused about orthodontics? If so, our team at Ortho 360 is happy to help you! To make braces a little less puzzling, we have provided the definitions to the following terms:
Band – A band is a metal ring that is wrapped tightly around your back molars. It is meant to support your large teeth and to keep them in tip-top shape. We don’t want them to ever crack or break. A band can also assist with headgear and bite correctors.
Bracket – A bracket is a small metal piece that is glued to the front surface of each tooth. This bracket holds the orthodontic wire in place and it also lets you customize your braces by holding different colored elastics. Brackets make orthodontic treatment possible by applying pressure to your teeth and making them move.
Retainer – A retainer is a helpful appliance that can be either permanent or removable. The permanent retainer is a thin wire that is glued to the back surfaces of your teeth. The removable retainer is a custom-made appliance that fits over your smile. You would generally wear this appliance at night. A retainer keeps your teeth in position after your braces have shifted them.
Adjustment – An adjustment is an appointment that is necessary in your orthodontic journey. During this appointment, your orthodontist will tighten and adjust the wires of your appliance to add pressure to your teeth. This will make your teeth continue to move. You will most likely be sore a few days after the appointment, but that is completely normal.
Orthodontist – An orthodontist is a dentist that has received 2-3 years of additional schooling and training. The schooling and training is specific to orthodontics and once one completes the program, they are a certified orthodontist.
